The new LAX Airport Metro Connector, part of the wider Landside Access Modernization Program, will link LAX’s Automated People Mover to Metro’s 96th Street/Crenshaw Station and associated bus terminals. Set for completion in 2024, the transit hub will create a fully intermodal facility and a new point of arrival into Los Angeles. The project will make it easier to arrive and depart the airport and to navigate the surrounding neighborhoods across transit modes. In addition to connecting the airport automated people mover and the metro light rail, the station will also accommodate bicycle parking, a bus plaza, and a vehicle drop-off on the 9.5 acre site.
I have been an integral team member on the project for the last eight years and have been involved in every design phase of the project from schematic design through construction administration.
Over the years, I have been responsible for many different elements of the design, with a primary focus on the roofs, façades, and canopies. These elements have very complex geometries that swoop under the automated people mover guideways and curve in plan and section, extending 1400 feet across the site. The roof features large glass curving skylights and complex hanging mesh soffits that follow this complex geometry.
I was responsible for the detailing and documentation of these elements, spanning from the initial concept to construction. Each component was modeled in Rhino with a high level of detail to provide a comprehensive visualization of the project. Subsequently, the model was translated into Revit for further detailing and documentation. I oversaw this process, contributing to the design, modeling, and documentation, though all phases of design.
Given the project’s complexity, extensive collaboration among the consulting team members was essential to realize the design. I closely collaborated with the engineers at ARUP throughout the design process, working on structural solutions to bring the vision to life. I was also heavily involved in the electrical and lighting coordination for the project and continue to collaborate with the consultants in the construction administration phase.
During construction, I have been performing Construction Administration duties, including regular site visits and field reviews, reviewing submittals, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, preparing addendums and bulletins, all within a fast turnaround time. I am very proud to see the project near completion and become the new gateway in to Los Angeles International Airport.
